A 一般的可能性

　　主語+ can可以意指 it is possible，即條件許可(這與 may所表示的那種可能性完全不同)：

　　You can ski on the hills.

　　你能在山上滑雪。(雪厚得能滑行。)

　　We cant bathe here on account of the sharks.

　　我們不能在這里游泳，因為有鯊魚。(在這里游泳不安全。)

　　Can you get to the top of the mountain in one day?

　　你能夠在一天之內爬上山頂嗎?(這可能嗎?)

　　B can也可以表示偶然的可能性：

　　Measles can be quite dangerous.

　　麻疹有可能很危險。(有時麻疹可能很危險。/有時它們是危險的。)

　　The Straits of Dover can be very rough.

　　多佛海峽風浪可能很大。(這個海峽可能有大風浪;這種情況有時發生。)

　　could用于過去時：

　　He could be very unreasonable

　　他會很不講道理的。(有時他很不講道理;這種事是有可能的。)

　　can這樣的用法只限于現在時與過去時，并且多半只用于肯定式。
