I could never have imagined what I would achieve through football.I owe my life, everything I have to football.

My life in football began with my granddad Joe,who took me to my first game.Over the years,I’ve been lucky enough to enjoy many of our highlights.I’ve played on every continent and everywhere I’ve played,I’ve seen the popularity of English football.I am proud to have been part of the success that English football has enjoyed over the past twenty years.

When my granddad took me to my first game,I could never have imagined that, almost 30 years on,FIFA would invite me to take part in the 2010 World Cup Tour.My granddad would have been so proud to have seen that.Unfortunately the day before I flew out for the draw my granddad died. That was a year ago today. He was an important figure in my life.He started me in football;he guided me through my career. My granddad was certainly as proud of me as I was of him.

Now I want to do something that will make my grandchildren proud.Through FIFA and President Blatter’s good work,I’ve seen the good that football can do.I’ve seen how it can change lives in all sorts of ways.I’ve seen this in South Africa,in Thailand,in Sierra Leone and all over the world. Now I want to do more and that’s why I’m here today. In fact,it’s why everyone from the England bid, from Prime Minister to Prince William,is here today.Because working together, the FIFA World Cup can achieve so much for so many people, and bring benefits that will be felt over generations. You all can make this happen. Each of you has the chance to create opportunities for young people in every corner of the world.

Our dream is to stage a World Cup that benefits billions. Our dream is to stage a World Cup that makes you, your grandchildren and everyone in football truly proud.Thank you very much.

Psychologist Joseph P.Allen says almost all parents and teenagers argue. But it’s the quality of the arguments that makes all the difference.

“We tell parents to think of those arguments as a critical training ground,”he says.Such arguments,he says, are actually mini life lessons in how to disagree—a necessary skill later on in life with partners, friends and colleagues.

Teens should be rewarded when arguing calmly and persuasively and not when they are yelling, crying or threatening,he says.

In Allen’s study,157 13-year-olds were videotaped describing their biggest disagreement with their parents.Allen interviewed the teens again at ages 15 and 16.“The teens who learned to be calm and confident and persuasive with their parents acted the same way when they were with their peers(同齡人),”he says. They were able to confidently disagree, saying “no” when offered alcohol or drugs. In fact, they were 40 percent more likely to say “no” than kids who didn’t argue with their parents.

For other kids,it was an entirely different story.“They would back down right away,”says Allen, saying they felt it pointless to argue with their parents. This kind of passivity was taken directly into peer groups, where these teens were more likely to acquiesce(勉強同意) when offered drugs or alcohol.“These were the teens we worried about,”he says.?

So,the best thing parents can do is help their teenager argue more effectively. For this,Allen offers one word:listen.

In the study, when parents listened to their kids, their kids listened back. They didn’t necessarily always agree,he says. But if one or the other made a good point, they would acknowledge that point.“They weren’t just trying to fight each other at every step and wear each other down. They were really trying to persuade the other person.”

Acceptable argument might go something like this:“How about I prove to you I can handle it for three weeks before we make a final decision about it?”

Again, parents won’t necessarily agree. But “they’ll get across the message that they take their kids’ point of view seriously and honestly consider what they have to say,”Allen says.

4.According to Allen, teens should be encouraged to .?

  A.earn more rewards

  B.develop new practical skills

C.yell and cry when they want to

  D.argue with their parents persuasively

5.What does the underlined part “back down” in Paragraph 5 mean?

A.To give up. B.To get angry.

C.To show off. D.To make threats.

  6.Whom was Allen worried about?

A.Teens who were addicted to drugs.

B.Teens who drank too much alcohol.

C.Teens who always argued with others.

D.Teens who didn’t say no when necessary.

  7.Allen advises parents to .?

A.try to agree with their kids

B.always try to persuade their kids

C.consider the feelings of their kids

  D.communicate with their kids effectively

The World Health Organization (WHO) has set new dietary guidelines for people around the world. The guidelines advise people to cut back on their sugar intake to stay healthy.

Last Saturday,Mum gave me two tickets for a film.Although she was too busy to go with me,she told me to sell the extra ticket if possibly. At the gate of the cinema,I met a handsome young man,who was offered to have them. But he had only an 100-yuan note.He asked me to wait a while for him change it in the cinema’s store.Without much thinking,I agreed. He walked so fast that I could hardly keep up for him.Soon he disappeared;I stood there without knowing how to do.Sudden I realized the handsome young fellow has cheated me.He had saved money, but lost his honor.

由第三段中的“He was an important figure in my life.He started me in football;he guided me through my career.”

由第四段中的“that’s why I’m here today. In fact,it’s why everyone from the England bid, from Prime Minister to Prince William,is here today.”及最后一段開頭的“Our dream is to stage a World Cup...”

通讀全文尤其是根據文中最后一句“Thank you very much.”

由第五段中的“they felt it pointless to argue with their parents. This kind of passivity was taken directly into peer groups...”

1.G G項與下文的“These include sugars that are added to processed foods and drinks such as cookies, candy and soft drinks.”

2.F 下文的“The reason is they exist in foods we might not think of as sweets...”

4.D D項與下文的“Even if you are not eating lollies(棒棒糖) and candy, you are probably eating a fair amount of sugar.”

  5.E E項與上文的“getting more exercise is a good solution”相呼應,指出運動可以消耗掉糖。
