這兩個詞都有“消息”之意，但詞義范圍有所不同。Message含義較廣，可指書面、口頭、無線電等多種渠道傳來的信息，因而有“消息、口信、電報”等意思，為可數名詞;news含義較窄，主要是通過報紙、電臺、電視等資訊媒介向公眾報道的最新消息，也可指原來未曾聽到過而現在聽到的消息，為不可數名詞。如：
