I began working in journalism(資訊工作)when I was eight. It was my mother's idea. She wanted me to “make something” of myself,
and decided I had better start young if I was to have any chance of keeping up with the competition.
With my load of magazines I headed toward Belleville Avenue. The crowds were there. There were two gas stations on the corner of Belleville and Union. For several hours I made myself highly visible,
making sure everyone could see me and the heavy black letters on the bag that said THE SATURDAY EVENING POST. When it was supper time,
I walked back home.
“How many did you sell,
my boy?” My mother asked.
“None.”
“Where did you go?”
“The corner of Belleville and Union Avenues.”
“What did you do?”
“Stood on the corner waiting for somebody to buy a Saturday Evening Post.”
“You just stood there?”
“Didn't sell a single one.”
“My God,
Russell!”
Uncle Allen put in,
“Well,
I've decided to take the Post.” I handed him a copy and he paid me a nickle(五分鎳幣). It was the first nickle I earned.
Afterwards my mother taught me how to be a salesman. I would have to ring doorbells,
address adults with self-confidence(自信),
and persuade them by saying that no one,
no matter how poor,
could afford to be without the Saturday Evening Post in the home.
One day,
I told my mother I'd changed my mind. I didn't want to make a success in the magazine business.
“If you think you can change your mind like this, ” she replied,
“you'll become a good-for-nothing.” She insisted that,
as soon as school was over,
I should start ringing doorbells,
selling magazines. Whenever I said no,
she would scold me.
My mother and I had fought this_battle almost as long as I could remember. My mother,
dissatisfied with my father's plain workman's life,
determined that I would not grow up like him and his people. But never did she expect that,
forty years later,
such a successful journalist as me would go back to her husband's people for true life and love.
31.

A.He wanted to be famous in the future.
B.The job was quite easy for him.

D.The competition for the job was fierce.
32.
From the dialogue between the boy and his mother,
we learn that the mother was________.
A.excited
B.interested

A.She forced him to continue.
B.She punished him.

34.
What does the underlined phrase “this battle”(last paragraph) refer to?

從句還原后為“New York is an example of many cities”,所以選擇of which。
5.B be designed for意為“為……
hold out意為“伸出,維持”;hold on意為“繼續,不掛斷電話”;hold up意為“阻礙,耽擱”,均不符合句意。
make good sense意為“很有意義”。
set up設立,成立;come up走近,出現;go up上升,增長;call up召喚,使想起。
文章最后一段中because the additional high “school” fee也有暗示。
13.B 根據前文decided to return to the homeland可知,此處表示“離開”。
14.C 由空后的made through years of work after school and the scholarships 可知,他用他的積蓄(課外工作所得和獎學金)買的。
take down拿下,摘下;put down放下,拒絕;lie down躺下;look down俯視,跌價。
16.C 根據后文中nearly ¥100,000可排除A和B,從had to pay the tax可知,攜帶特殊的物品出境需要繳稅。
17.B it代指前面的the tax。
19.B be proud of以……
20.A in the presence of Glen“當著Glen的面”。
22.A 根據Glen was amazed可知答案。
If(he was) found out reusing and carrying fake and shoddy(劣質的)goods, he would be charged according to law! find out“查明(真相)”。
27.D board the plane登機。
28.D 固定短語make a deep impression on表示“對……
