When I was a child, I often dreamed of the time when I could leave home and escape to the city. We lived on a farm and in the winter especially(尤其), we were quite cut off from the outside world. As soon as I left school, I packed up my bags and moved to the capital. However, I soon discovered that city life has its problems, too.
One disadvantage(不利) is money—it costs so much to go out, not to mention basics like food and housing. Another disadvantage is pollution. I suffer from asthma(哮喘), and at times the air is so bad that I am afraid to go outside. Then there is the problem of travelling round. Although I have a car, I seldom use it because of the traffic jams(交通堵塞). One choice(選擇) is to go by bicycle, but that can be quite dangerous.
Of course, there are advantages(有利). First, there is so much to do in the city, whatever your tastes in culture(文化) or entertainment(娛樂). Besides, there are wonderful jobs and greater chances of moving to a more important job or position. Finally, if you like shopping, the variety(多種) of goods(貨物) is very surprising—and, what is more, shops are often only a short walk away.
Is life better then, in the city? Perhaps it is, when you are in your teens(十幾歲) twenties. However, as you get older, and especially if you have small children, the peace(寧靜) of the countryside may seem preferable. I certainly hope to move back there soon.

For centuries, Pompeii lay buried under stone and ash. Then, in the year 1861, one Italian scientist named Giuseppe began to uncover Pompeii. Slowly, carefully, Giuseppe and his men dug. The city looked almost the same as it had looked before. There were streets and fountains, houses and shops. There was a stadium with 20000 seats. Perhaps the most important of all, there were everyday objects, which tell us a great deal about the people who lived in Pompeii. Many glasses and jars had some dark blue color in the bottom, so we know that the people of Pompeii liked wine. They likes bread too, metal bread pans were in every bakery, in one bakery there were round, flat loaves of bread-a type of bread that is still sold in Italy today. Tiny boxes filled with a dark, shiny powder tell us that woman liked to wear eye-makeup

(2011·重慶卷,A)
There was a gardener who looked after his garden with great care. To water his flowers, he used two buckers. One was a shiny and new bucket. The other was a very old and dilapidated one,
which had seen many years of service, but was now past its best.
Every morning, the gardener would fill up the two buckets. Then he would carry them along the path, one on each side, to the flowerbeds. The new bucket was very proud of itself. It could carry a full bucket of water without a single drop spilled (溢出). The old bucket felt very ashamed because of its holes: before it reached the flowerbeds, much water had leaked along the path.
Sometimes the new bucket would say,“See how capable I am ! How good it is that the gardener has me to water the flowers every day ! I don't know why he still bothers with you. What a waste of space you are!”
And all that the old bucket could say was. “I know I'm not very useful, but I can only do my best. I'm happy that the gardener still finds a little bit of use in me,at least .”
One day, the gardener heard that kind or conversation .After watering the flowers as usual,
he said. “You both have done your work very well. Now I am going to carry you back. I want you to look carefully along the path.”
Then the two buckets did so.All along the path, they noticed,on the side where the new bucket was carried, there was just bare(光禿禿的)earth;on the other side where the old bucket was carried, there was a joyous row of wild flowers, leading all the way to the garden.

While small may be beautiful, tall is just plain uncomfortable it seems, particularly when it comes to staying in hotels and eating in restaurants.
The Tall Persons Club Great Britain (TPCGB), which was formed six months ago to campaign for the needs of the tall, has turned its attention to hotels and restaurants. Beds that are too small, shower heads that are too low, and restaurant tables with hardly any leg-room all make life difficult for those of above average height, it says.
But it is not just the extra-tall whose needs are not being met. The average height of the population has been increasing yet the standard size of beds, doorways, and chairs has remained unchanged.
“The bedding industry says a bed should be six inches larger than the person using it, so even a king-size bed at 6′6″(6 feet and 6 inches) is falling short for 25% of men, while the standard 6′3″ bed caters for less than half of the male population.” Said TPCGB president Phil Heinricy, “Seven-foot beds would work fine.”
Similarly, restaurant tables can cause no end of problems. Small tables, which mean the long-legged have to sit a foot or so away from them, are enough to make tall customers go elsewhere.
Some have already taken note, however. At Queens Moat Houses Caledonian Hotel in Edinburgh, 6′6″beds are now put in as standard after requests for longer beds from taller visitors, particularly Americans.
5.What is the purpose of the TPCGB campaign?
A.To provide better services.
B.To rebuild hotels and restaurants.
C.To draw public attention to the needs of the tall.
D.To attract more people to become its members.
6.Which of the following might be a bed of proper length according to Phil Heinricy?
A.7′2″.
B.7′.
C.6′6″.
D.6′3″.
7.What may happen to restaurants with small tables?
A.They may lose some customers.
B.They may start businesses elsewhere.
C.They have to find easy chairs to match the tables.
D.They have to provide enough space for the long-legged.
答案:A。
8.What change has already been made in a hotel in Edinburgh?
A.Tall people pay more for larger beds.
B.6′6″beds have taken the place of 6′3″beds.
C.Special rooms are kept for Americans.
D.Guest rooms are standardized.
